Tips for preparing an outstanding Resume







· Follow a bulleted style to make your resume reader-friendly.
· Keep your resume to one page, if you are having more experience, two pages are appropriate.
· Do not go beyond two pages with your resume as resumes are shorter these days(Exemptions are there for this).
· Make your resume unique as far as possible avoid using templates.
· Avoid justified text blocks; as this will lead to little spaces between words.
· Be honest with your resume.
·  Do not forget to include ways to contact you — Website address/URL (if available), city and state only (no street address), a single phone number and a single email address.
·  As employers screen resumes for 6 seconds maximum show the employer at a glance what you want to do and what you’re good at.
·  Consider a section such as “Summary of Qualifications.”
·  Avoid using personal pronouns (I, my, me) in a resume.
·  In listing your jobs,Title/position, name of employer, city/state of employer, dates of employment are more important.
·  Do not forget to mention the locations of your past jobs (city and state).
·  Do list your jobs in reverse chronological order.
·  Don’t mix noun and verb phrases when describing your jobs.
·  Avoid the verb, “Work” because it’s a weak verb.Be more specific. “Collaborate(d)” is a good substitute.
·  Think in terms of accomplishments when preparing your resume.
·  Do not use expressions like “Duties included,” “Responsibilities included,” or “Responsible for.”
·  Do stress on transferable skills.
·  Numerically express how many people you supervised, by what percentage you increased sales, how much money you saved, how many products you represented, etc.
·  While mentioning older experience list them like title, employer, location with or without dates of employment.Title this section Previous Professional Experience.
·  Avoid mentioning skills and job activities you don’t want to do in the future.
·  While mentioning your educational qualifications remember the order of importance to the reader; thus the preferred order for listing your education is: Name of degree (spelled out: Bachelor of ____________) in name of major, name of university, city/state of university, graduation year.
·  Avoid mentioning high school details.
·  Do not mention height, weight, age, date of birth, place of birth, marital status, sex, ethnicity/race, health, (except for an international resume), reasons for leaving previous job(s), your photo, salary information, the title “Resume,” or any controversial information such as religion, church affiliations, or political affiliations.
· Avoid mentioning hobbies or other irrelevant information on a resume.
· If you are interested in sports of any kind do not forget to mention it as employers sometimes seek out athletes for their drive and competitiveness, teamwork and leadership skills.
· References should be given on a separate sheet and provide them only if it is asked.
· Avoid the use of “References available upon request.
· Avoid misspellings and typos
